چکیده

A theoretical study of the dielectrophoretic ~DEP! spectrum of a pair of touching colloidal particles or biological cells in a host fluid under the application of a nonuniform alternating current ~ac! electric field is presented. The main objective of this work is to investigate the correlation effects due to the presence of mutual polarization on the DEP spectrum. In particular, we employ the multiple image method to account for the effect of multiple images, and obtain an analytic expression for the DEP force. It is found that, at low frequencies, the DEP force can be enhanced ~reduced! significantly for the longitudinal ~transverse! field case due to the presence of multiple images. The numerical results can be well understood in the spectral representation theory. To first order in the dipole interaction, our results reduce to the established formula derived by an alternative method. Our approach demonstrates the importance of the correlation effects in ac electrokinetic phenomena of colloidal suspensions. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1737050#

Dielectrophoresis of charged colloidal suspensions.

We present a theoretical study of dielectrophoretic (DEP) crossover spectrum of two polarizable particles under the action of a nonuniform ac electric field. For two approaching particles, the mutual polarization interaction yields a change in their respective dipole moments, and hence, in the DEP crossover spectrum. The induced polarization effects are captured by the multiple image method. Us...

On-chip micromanipulation and assembly of colloidal particles by electric fields

We overview the ways in which electric fields can be used for on-chip manipulation and assembly of colloidal particles. Particles suspended in water readily respond to alternating (AC) or direct current (DC) electric fields. Charged particles in DC fields are moved towards oppositely charged electrodes by electrophoresis. Dielectrophoresis, particle mobility in AC fields, allows precise manipul...

Theory of the dielectrophoretic behavior of clustered colloidal particles in two dimensions

Clustering behaviors in real colloidal suspensions can often be seen. In such clusters, the separation between the suspended particles is so close that we cannot neglect the multiple image effect on the dielectrophoresis of the particles. Since the exact multiple image method, so far, exists in two-dimensional cases, rather than in three-dimensional cases, as an initial model we have investigat...

A Navier-Stokes phase-field crystal model for colloidal suspensions.

We develop a fully continuous model for colloidal suspensions with hydrodynamic interactions. The Navier-Stokes Phase-Field Crystal model combines ideas of dynamic density functional theory with particulate flow approaches and is derived in detail and related to other dynamic density functional theory approaches with hydrodynamic interactions. The derived system is numerically solved using adap...

A self-consistent renormalized jellium approach for calculating structural and thermodynamic properties of charge stabilized colloidal suspensions.

An approach is proposed which allows to self-consistently calculate the structural and the thermodynamic properties of highly charged aqueous colloidal suspensions. The method is based on the renormalized jellium model with the background charge distribution related to the colloid-colloid correlation function. The theory is used to calculate the correlation functions and the effective colloidal...
